Hatshepsut Temple at a glance
The temple is in Deir el-Bahari on the West Bank of the Nile, in the ancient Theban necropolis. It is the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, not her royal tomb. The two are separate monuments, so do not look for her burial chamber here.
The temple lies under the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari. The photos on this page show it below the cliffs and, closer up, its ramp and terraces. Allow time to walk up, since the layout is built around that climb.

Opening hours
The ministry lists the temple as open daily from 06:00 to 17:00. The ticket portal also gives 06:00 as the start. It lists the last entry as 17:00 in summer and 16:00 in winter. Plan to arrive well before 16:00 and check the current timetable before you go.
The temple stands in the open, below the cliffs. In the long-term averages, daytime highs in Luxor reach about 106ยฐF (41ยฐC) from June to August, while January averages about 73ยฐF (23ยฐC). In the warm months, go at opening time. Our Luxor weather guide has the monthly figures.
The story of the temple
This is the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, at Deir el-Bahari on the West Bank. The ministry's page for the temple points to three themes in its decoration: the divine birth, Osiris statues of the ruler and the expedition to Punt.
Use those three as a checklist when you walk the temple. A guide can point out where each theme appears, and a guided half day on the West Bank is one way to cover it.
If you want to compare tombs and temples, the same West Bank also holds the Valley of the Kings, where the kings were buried, and the Tomb of Tutankhamun.

Tomb extras such as Tutankhamun are charged on top, and the base ticket for the Valley of the Kings is described as covering three regular tombs, so confirm what yours includes at the gate. Confirm the hours of Deir el-Medina on the day. The Colossi of Memnon are another West Bank stop.
Practical tips
- Wear closed shoes with grip for the ramp and the terraces.
- Bring water, a hat and sun protection.
- Photos for personal, non-commercial use are allowed, without flash indoors. Professional lighting and setup equipment needs a permit.
- If you need step-free routes, ask about access in advance, because the temple is built on a ramp and terraces.
- Ask your driver or hotel about the current parking and shuttle arrangements at the site.
A simple order for the day: start at the temple at opening time, when the light is gentler and the heat is lower, and move on to the Valley of the Kings afterwards. Both open at 06:00, so you can reverse the order if you prefer. Leave the afternoon for a rest at your hotel, and do not try to see every West Bank site in one day.
To plan the rest of your stay, read our list of things to do in Luxor, or see where to stay on the East Bank or the West Bank.
