A typical morning
Times shift with the season, so read them as a sample. One operator gives the example of a 05:30 pickup and a 06:30 takeoff. Its terms list pickup between 04:30 and 05:30 from September to November, and between 03:30 and 04:30 from May to August. Do not assume a fixed start time all year.

When balloons fly: the 2026 season
Do not count on summer flights. One operator's homepage describes flights over the summer. At the same time, Egypt Today reported a summer pause from 1 June to 30 August 2026 and the resumption of flights in September. Reports give different restart dates, from 1 September to 23 September.
By late September the picture was clear: an Egyptian news report counted 32 flights with about 896 passengers on 24 September 2026. If you travel outside the cooler months, ask the operator for confirmed dates before you book anything around a balloon ride.
Weather also decides individual days. Long-term averages (1981–2010) give a January daytime high of 73°F (23°C) and a mean low of 43°F (5.9°C), so dress in layers for the dark start. See Luxor weather and best time to visit for the full table.
Safety and past accidents
Ballooning carries real risks, and there is no point in downplaying them or exaggerating them. Here is the record in short.
- 2013: A balloon crash near Luxor killed 19 tourists, according to an AP retrospective.
- January 2025: Egypt's Defense Ministry reported rescuing 24 balloon passengers after a wind-related emergency landing northwest of Luxor. The aviation ministry stated that nobody was injured.
- Advice from abroad: the UK Foreign Office notes that some British tour operators no longer sell balloon flights because safety standards cannot be verified.
No balloon flight is risk-free, and no operator can promise a flight on a given day. Ask which weather limits the operator uses, follow the pilot's instructions and decide with that in mind.
Booking, cancellations and refunds
One operator's pages disagree with each other, so ask for the exact terms before you pay. Its terms say a weather cancellation by the operator brings a full refund. Its refund policy says a rebooking or a refund minus bank fees. A booking page advertises free cancellation up to 24 hours before the flight, while the terms charge a full cancellation fee in that window.
The operator requires advance booking. A deposit or payment confirms the booking, and the balance is due at least 24 to 48 hours before the flight. Ask in writing what happens if your flight is cancelled because of wind.
Tips, vendors and carriages
Tipping has no fixed tariff. Decide in advance what you want to give and clarify which services are optional. Around the pickup point and at the sights you may meet vendors and carriage drivers. A polite no is enough, and agreeing the price before you get into a carriage avoids arguments later.
