The Valley of the Kings at a glance
The Valley of the Kings lies on the West Bank of Luxor, the side of the Nile where ancient Thebes buried its dead. The necropolis of ancient Thebes has been a World Heritage site since 1979. That status is not a shared ticket: each site sells its own entry.
The photograph at the top of this page is a historical image from the 19th century. Today the valley has a ticket office and an optional electric tram, and you visit the tombs one by one on foot.

What the basic ticket covers
Travel writers describe the basic ticket as good for three of the regularly opened tombs. A fourth regular tomb needs a second basic ticket. Ask at the ticket office how your ticket works on the day, because the rules at the gate decide.
Not every tomb is open at the same time, and the selection changes. Ask at the entrance which tombs are open before you choose, and do not plan around a single tomb you have read about. The tombs with an extra fee are bought on top of the basic ticket.
The tombs with an extra fee
These four are sold separately. Prices are the 2026 posted prices, adult and student.
Tutankhamun (KV62), 700/350 EGP
The best-known tomb in the valley, found by Howard Carter in November 1922. Details on what you see and what the ticket adds are on our Tomb of Tutankhamun page.
Ramses V and VI (KV9), 220/110 EGP
The painted corridor pictured beside the opening section belongs to this tomb. Its fee is far lower than those for Tutankhamun and Seti I.
Seti I (KV17), 2,000 EGP
The highest single entry fee in the valley, with the same price for adults and foreign students. Decide in advance whether it fits your budget.
Ay in the West Valley, 200/100 EGP
This tomb is in the West Valley, not in the main valley, and has its own fee.
Hours, tram and photos
The ministry lists daily opening from 06:00 to 17:00, with no weekly closing day. Individual tombs can still be closed on a given day. Check the current timetable before you go.
A separate electric tram runs from the entrance to the tombs. Travel writers list it at 20 EGP per person for the round trip, with a ride of about 3 minutes. It is not part of the basic ticket.
Personal, non-commercial photos are allowed at archaeological sites, and inside tombs without flash. Professional lighting and set-up equipment needs a permit. Ask the guard before you raise a camera in any tomb, because rules can differ from one tomb to the next.

Paying, students and the Luxor Pass
The ministry's ticket FAQ lists Visa and Mastercard for the portal, the app, the ticket offices and the self-service kiosks. Keep some cash for small extras all the same. Tickets bought online cannot be refunded or replaced if lost, so check the date before you pay.
Student prices need a valid student ID. Ticket portals for other Luxor sites set the age limit at 24, so do not rely on a discount if you are older. Children under 6 are listed as free at several Luxor sites; ask at the gate for this one.
The Luxor Pass is a 5-day pass. An official leaflet dated early 2024 listed 130 USD for the standard pass and 250 USD for the premium pass, with lower student prices. The standard version left out the Seti I tomb. Those figures are from 2023 and 2024, so confirm the current terms and prices before you buy a pass.
Heat matters on a visit here. Long-term averages for June to August reach about 41 ยฐC (106 ยฐF) at midday. Our Luxor weather page has the month-by-month figures, and the gates open at 06:00 for a reason.
