The best time to visit Luxor

A reading of the temperature table, not an official recommendation.

November to March

These months have the lowest daytime highs, from 73°F (23°C) in January to 85°F (29.5°C) in March. They suit long days at open-air sites such as Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. Pack a warm layer for the evenings and for early starts.

Winter nights

The average low is 42.6°F (5.9°C) in January and 46.0°F (7.8°C) in February and December. A dawn balloon flight or an early temple start feels cold, even when the day warms up.

April, October and the shoulders

Average highs are about 95.5°F (35.3°C) in both months. Mornings and evenings are the better times for sightseeing, and midday is best spent indoors or at rest.

Summer, June to August

Average highs are about 106°F (41°C), and nights stay above 74°F (23°C). Single days can be hotter than the average. If you travel in summer, sightsee early in the morning and again in the evening.

Plan your day around the heat

Opening hours help you avoid the hottest hours.

  • Karnak and the Valley of the Kings open daily at 06:00 and close at 17:00. Karnak's last entry is at 16:00.
  • Luxor Temple is open until 20:00, with the last entry at 19:00, so the cooler evening hours work for a visit.
  • The Luxor Museum has a morning session from 09:00 and an evening session. In summer the last entry is 12:00 in the morning and 19:00 in the evening. In winter it is 13:00 and 20:00.
  • The Karnak sound and light show runs at 20:00 and 21:00, though the schedule can change.
  • Balloon operators set the pickup early. One operator lists 03:30 to 04:30 from May to August and 04:30 to 05:30 from September to November.

Balloon flights in summer 2026 paused and were reported to restart in September. Ask the operator about flights on your dates, and see our hot air balloon guide.
