Status of the Tomb of Nefertari

The Tomb of Nefertari is closed to visitors at the time of writing, and no reopening date has been confirmed. In November 2024 the ministry stated that the tomb had been closed in March of that year for humidity monitoring, and that a reopening under controlled conditions was being studied. A report from September 2026 still describes the tomb as closed, since 2 March 2024.

An official price list from November 2024 showed 2,500 EGP for foreign adults for this tomb. That is a past listing, not an offer, and it does not mean tickets can be bought today. Do not plan a trip around a visit to the Tomb of Nefertari, and check the news close to your date.

What is the Valley of the Queens?

The Valley of the Queens is a site on the West Bank of Luxor, in the necropolis of ancient Thebes. The photograph above is a historical image of excavations from the early 20th century, not a view of the site as you find it today.

The valley has its own entry price and is not covered by the Valley of the Kings ticket. Which tombs are open on your day can vary, so ask at the ticket office what is accessible before you decide how long to stay.

Opening starts at 06:00. The last entry is at 17:00 in summer and 16:00 in winter and Ramadan. These are entry times; the site does not promise that every tomb stays open until then. Check the current timetable before you go.

The ticket portal lists free entry for children under 6, and student prices need a valid student ID with an age limit of 24. Visa and Mastercard are listed for the portal, the app and the ticket offices. Tickets bought online cannot be refunded or replaced if lost, so check the date before you pay.

Combine it with other West Bank sites

The Valley of the Queens fits into a day on the West Bank with other sites, each with its own ticket. The table shows the posted 2026 prices for foreign visitors, adult and student.

Medinet Habu is listed at 230 EGP on one official page and 220 EGP on another, so expect either at the ticket office. At Deir el-Medina one named tomb costs extra (120 EGP adult, 60 EGP student). The Colossi of Memnon are free to see from the road, but that does not cover the excavation area behind them.

Three sites plus Tutankhamun

Add the extra ticket for the tomb of Tutankhamun and the total is 2,110 EGP for an adult and 1,055 EGP for a student.

Planning notes

Start early. The gates open at 06:00, and long-term averages for June to August reach about 41 ยฐC (106 ยฐF), so the cooler hours go first. The Luxor weather page has the month-by-month figures.

If you want a royal tomb with a painted interior, the Valley of the Kings is the usual choice, with a basic ticket of 750 EGP and extra fees for some tombs. See the Valley of the Kings page and the Tutankhamun tomb page for the details.

To cross the Nile, there is a public ferry between the East Bank and the West Bank. An undated ministry brochure lists it from 06:00 to 23:00 and puts the bridge about 12 km south of the city. Fares quoted by local guides run from 5 to 10 EGP up to 10 to 25 EGP, so ask the price before you board.

Sleeping on the East Bank or the West Bank changes your first hour of the day. The where to stay page compares the two sides.
